Crayon Shin-chan is a Japanese animated television series, which is otherwise known as Shin Chan in much of the world, as designated by owner TV Asahi. Adult Swim is currently showing the second full season of the FUNimation English dubbed version of the show at midnight on Saturdays.
In proper Japanese, the title should be "Shin-chan," but the international spelling has eliminated the hyphen for unknown reasons. Shin chan has enjoyed success on multiple continents, including Latin America, parts of Europe, continental Asia, and has just recently made it to the United States. The show, which has been in production since 1992, is based on Yoshito Usui's manga series. In Japan, the series is aired in 15-minute, or 30-minute timeslots, which are each made up of smaller vignettes. In the US it is run in a 30-minute timeslot. While the series has had previous attempts at adaptation into English and introduction into the US TV market the current version that runs on Adult Swim has been by far the most successful. FUNimation is the third company to adapt the series into English. The previous two kept the series' original younger intended audience. This time the show was pitched to Adult Swim with the specific intent to re-write the show's dialog for an older audience. Adult Swim accepted, but because of their hesitation with comedy anime, they decided not to go with a full season order and instead go with a 6 episode temporary lease. The network aired the show in a limited "test run" from August 19 through September 9, 2006. Due to the success of the test run on Adult Swim, the series was picked up for more episodes and is now into its second full season. Because the dialouge is so drastically changed from the original in the FUNimation dub there is a much more involved multi-step writing process that goes far beyond the usual adaption to more natural English used for most ADR series. They also reorganize the viginettes included in each episode. This obviously increases the cost as more skilled comedy writers are needed to write original jokes and more adult dialouge. The first DVD of the FUNimation version will be released on May 12, 2008. It will contain the first thirteen episodes from both the first season and the test run. Read more about it on the DVD page.

Each year in mid-May the broadcast networks present their planned schedules for the following Fall to advertisers and the press in elaborate expensive presentations called upfronts. The cable networks also make upfront presentations but usually in much more low-key individualized presentations to select advertisers and ad agencies. This year however things are a bit different. NBC is foregoing the elaborate uprfront week presentation and instead went the cable network route of a press release announcing their plans for the entire year followed by more focused individual presentations. They will still be holding an event during the week but it will be less formalized and structured. In addition the Turner Entertainment cable networks TBS, TNT & truTV will be making a joint presentation on the scale of a broadcast presentaion and also do it during the upfront week. Another difference this year is that due to the writers strike many more shows were given early renewals than usual either so they could begin production on the fall episode early. This was done for a few reasons: to alleviate some of the costs of restarting production for only a handful of episodes to air in the spring, to alleviate the finacial hardships on the staff that had been out of work for months, to alleviate any fears of cancellation after the long midseason break and lastly to try and get ahead of a possible strike by the Screen Actors Guild this summer. Upfront ScheduleThe schedule for the 2008 upfronts is as follows: Fall scheduleAs the schedules are revealed the information will be posted on the Fall Grid. The cable network information will be posted to the upcoming show section of the Cable Grid page (already released information from other networks is listed there already). Cancelled Shows
